The Semi-Retired Foamer has been a railfan since he was around 5 years old, oh yes a very young age, an age when one really should avoid being involved with the gunzel community to any great extent. A few rather unsavoury people bringing that fact home.
After a few decades of train chasing, one decided to break with protocol and get married, thus leading to a severe cut in railfan activity.
Subsequent dealings with hate breeders, lunatics, mental defectives and self-appointed preservation overlords lead to an even greater decrease in my hobby participation.
However things have changed thanks to our small group of trusted mates, interest has returned, and now I have become a bit more involved yet again.
.
_
Over the years I have tried my best to further both the hobby, as well as the friendships that it brings. I have done this by setting up proactive groups both here in Australia, as well as the Philippines. It is with huge honour that I am often considered the founding father of the railfan hobby in the Philippines (my second home).
_
I don't take the hobby too seriously and I am a friend to anyone who is good and genuine. But never forgive those who have used their hate to destroy my hobby or hurt the friends within it.

Let's Make The Hobby Great Again!
I aim to share the era that I considered mine, the 80s and 90s. I also like to help promote, and even raise funds for, the various heritage societies that keep the era alive

FOR THE LOVE OF ALCO PT3

Howdy folks!

One major drawback of years of neglecting to catalogue over 300,000 photos is that I'm now playing catch-up. While I've managed to organize thousands of images on this blog across various themes, there are still countless others sitting around waiting for their moment.

To tackle this backlog, I'm embarking on a mission to sort through and categorize a substantial number of these photos in the coming months. Expect to see posts dedicated to locomotives, carriages, infrastructure, trams, and buses, catering to those with even a passing interest in these subjects.

Prepare for the approaching tsunami of photographs from the 80s till today.

If you have an interest in aviation and other guff, check out my

For Locomotive & Tram - Updates - Status - Photos.

Following the mass withdrawal of most of the 'New South Wales' ALCo fleet, class leader 4401 was restored and repainted into her original livery.
Following this, she spent a short amount of time in use on trip train runs around Sydney.
She is seen here on the Departure Roads of the now removed Delec Locomotive Depot in Sydney, about to head out to operate some of those services.
4401 is now statically preserved at the Junee Roundhouse, while 44222 was rebuilt as GL108.

For the entry back into service following restoration, 4486 hauled a special train from Cowra to Woodstock and return.
At the time she was owned by the 'Lachlan ALCo Group', but ownership more recently changed to 'NSW Transport Heritage'.

Now scrapped 4471 is about to depart Bomaderry station headed to Sydney.
Following sale by the government railways, she went on to serve a few different owners, until Qube decided to scrap her during April 2022.

4438 inside the workshop at Cardiff on the day of the big ALCo auction.
She would be sold for scrap.

967 (ex class leader 930) sitting at the Dynon Locomotive Depot in Melbourne Victoria.
The class were frequent visitors to Melbourne from their home state of South Australia.
Today she is statically preserved at the 'National Railway Museum' in Adelaide.

Now preserved Greek A.302 when still in service.
Location & Photo: Unknown

4528 4502 3532 stored in Chullora Workshops (Sydney).
All would go to Silverton, with 3532 being restored to service as 45s1.
The other two were never restored, and are now believed to be stored with the 'Lachlan Valley Railway' However I'm advised this could have changed.

Railfans will long remember train 4168 from Sandgate to Port Botany. Always a stunning array of different combinations, as many days as possible were spent out trying to capture it.
Here it is seen passing through Enfield with GM37 GM40 4463 and JL404 up front.
Of the ALCos, JL404 (numbered back to 44209) is still operational, while 4463 has been scrapped.
For those who care, the two GM class are still with us, the last update on 'Australian Locomotive Rosters' listing GM37 as operational with Aurizon and GM40 stored.

Above: 4483 on a works train at Concord West when back in her Freightrail Blue livery.
Below: Seen after sale and wearing the attractive Southern Shorthaul livery, and shunting the Sydney Haulage siding on Sydney's Botany line.
After a shunting accident, she would be stored for many years at the container terminal in Minto. I was more recently told she had disappeared, and it's currently though that she has likely been scrapped.

Equally scrapped 4438 (above) and 4466 (below) inside the now demolished Delec Locomotive Depot in Enfield, Sydney.

4514 was preserved, but now scrapped.

FL220 is now owned by Watco and located in Western Australia.

4846 and 48s36 passing through Enfield with a rake of containers. 48s36 still survives.

Now scrapped 4445 was looking pretty sad and sorry by the time I caught up with her in Junee.
That cab was saved though, and survives in Werris Creek.

4446 was repainted in this special livery in the final days of the 'World Series' 44 class. But despite this, she would be sold for scrap in the upcoming sale.

The end was getting close for the 44 class when class leader 4401 was found at Delec.
Luckily, as seen in a photo above, she would go on to be preserved.
Though nowadays that is only on static display.

That 81 is still with us, but the poor ol 48 is gone.

The missus recently went to Auto One and got 4 new hubcaps and wing mirror for her Ford Falcon.
In fairness it was a really good swap!

How we laughed.
